The 16th International Conference on Quantum Physics and Logic (QPL 2019) will take place at 
Chapman University June 10-14, 2019. The conference brings together researchers working on 
mathematical foundations of quantum physics, quantum computing, and related areas, with a 
focus on structural perspectives and the use of logical tools, ordered algebraic and 
category-theoretic structures, formal languages, semantical methods, and other computer 
science techniques applied to the study of physical behaviour in general. Work that applies
structures and methods inspired by quantum theory to other fields (including computer science)
is also welcome.

A call for papers and registration details will follow in a few weeks and will also be posted

The Theoretical Physics Department at Fermilab is seeking candidates for one Associate Scientist position in the area of theoretical quantum information science (QIS), working at its interface with fundamental physics and quantum field theory. This position is for a five-year term, starting in 2019. It is equivalent to a tenure-track faculty position at a university having the possibility of leading to an appointment without time limit. An appointment at the level of Scientist or Senior Scientist, equivalent to a tenured Associate Professor or Full Professor at a university, is open for consideration depending on the candidate’s expertise. We are seeking a candidate with a doctorate in theoretical physics who has demonstrated exceptional creativity and a high level of competence in his/her research. The job listing is here:

QIS is a growing research direction for the Fermilab theoretical physics department, which has an existing strong research program in Lattice QCD, Perturbative QCD, Neutrino Physics, Dark Matter and physics beyond the standard model. The Theory QIS initiative at Fermilab is part of a new collaboration with the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at Caltech and the Institute for Nuclear Theory at the University of Washington. Topics of interest include:

* Quantum simulation of quantum field theories describing strongly coupled systems.

* Tensor networks, their utility for simulation and their connections to quantum gravity.

* Quantum algorithms for traditional HEP computational problems.

* Applying quantum technologies and quantum sensors to probe fundamental physics.

The successful candidate will play a central role in the newly launched Fermilab Quantum Science Program (https://qis.fnal.gov/). This program includes a variety of experimental and theoretical research directions carried out in synergy with academic and industry partners. In addition to activities in the Theoretical Physics Department, examples of synergistic activities include SRF cavities for quantum computing, quantum teleportation experiments, the use of qubits as quantum sensors for dark matter searches, as well as connections between Fermilab’s Scientific computing division and quantum computing industry partners.

Faculty Positions at QuICS UMD

The Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS) is currently seeking outstanding quantum information researchers to join the Center faculty as QuICS Fellows. QuICS is a research partnership between the University of Maryland (UMD) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), with faculty from both institutions. Accordingly, applicants will be considered for tenure-track positions at UMD, and those who are US citizens may also be considered for permanent employment as researchers at NIST.

Located at the University of Maryland, College Park, just outside of Washington, D.C., the Center advances research and education in quantum computer science and quantum information theory. Ongoing projects at QuICS include theoretical and experimental research on quantum algorithms, quantum complexity theory, quantum communication, quantum error correction and fault tolerance, quantum-enhanced metrology, quantum cryptography and quantum-secure cryptography, implementations of quantum information processing, foundations of quantum mechanics, applications of quantum information to physics, and more.

QuICS Fellows are expected to lead externally funded research groups and carry out cutting-edge research on quantum information. The QuICS Fellows work together to set the direction of the Center, including a robust visitor program, frequent conferences and workshops, Center-funded fellowships for outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and courses on quantum information topics.

Postdocs at Georgetown and NC State

Immediate openings are available for two postdoctoral fellowships in quantum information science, focused on problems relevant to condensed matter physics. One position will be at North Carolina State and focus on simulations of frustrated magnetism, the other will be at Georgetown University and will focus on simulating driven-dissipative systems. In both cases, our goal is to run prototype algorithms on currently available hardware. Experience in computation, many-body physics, and quantum computing is preferred. This position is funded by the new DOE initiative in quantum information science.

Faculty position at NC State

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is seeking to fill multiple tenure-track faculty positions beginning in August 2019. It is anticipated that hiring will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, but candidates at all levels will be considered.

* The department seeks candidates in all areas of computer architecture and systems who apply their disciplines to emerging areas, including but not limited to: quantum computing (especially topics synergistic with the IBM Q Hub at NC State, http://quantum.ncsu.edu ), autonomous systems, application specific computing, big data, cyberspace security, embedded systems, architectures for machine learning, and emerging computing paradigms.

* Candidates are also being sought in support of the NSF Advanced Self-powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) Nanosystems Engineering Research Center (http://assist.ncsu.edu/) which is focused on self-powered health and environment monitoring platforms through novel energy harvesting technologies and low power sensors, devices and circuits.

Postdocs at IBM Q Hub at NC State

We are seeking multiple post-doctoral research associates to participate in the new IBM Q Hub at NC State. This partnership between NC State, IBM, and the Hub Members is focused on growing the quantum computing ecosystem and advancing quantum computing, and will provide early access to the latest IBM Q commercial quantum computing systems.

Overview

On May 10, 2018, NC State and IBM jointly announced that NC State University had joined the IBM Q Network as the first university-based IBM Q Hub in the Americas. The Hub, led by NC State, will be structured as a hub and spoke model of engagement, and members can be from industry, academia, government, etc. Other announced IBM Q University Hubs include Keio University in Japan, University of Melbourne in Australia, and Oxford University in the UK. Over time it is envisioned that these and future hubs will share tools, lessons learned, best practices, etc., to facilitate the rapidly emerging field of quantum information science. The IBM Q Hub at NC State will commence formal operations October 1, 2018. Initially, Members will have access to IBM’s 20 qubit machines followed by a next generation 50 qubit capability anticipated in the first quarter of 2019. Early usage is anticipated to be targeted towards software tools development, algorithms and applications, and education. The focus application areas will be quantum chemistry, machine learning, and optimization/financial modeling.

Primary Duties

The primary responsibilities in support of the Hub activities will be to assist in providing on-board training as well as ongoing technical assistance pertaining to quantum computing and the IBM Q system to Hub members. In addition, it is anticipated that significant effort will be devoted to personal and collaborative research related to quantum computing, such as applications, algorithms, and contributions to open source software stacks in support of quantum computing. Successful candidates will receive affiliation in the academic department most appropriate for their backgrounds and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

* PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical and/or Computer engineering, Mathematics, or other field related to quantum computing

* PhD awarded no more than 5 years prior to the start of employment

* At least 1 year of experience directly related to quantum computing

Desired Qualifications

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Ability to work independently

* Strong record of peer-reviewed publications related to quantum computing

* Experience applying quantum computing to quantum chemistry, machine learning, or optimization/financial models
