2 Juniorprofessors in Theoretical
Physics (Condensed Matter, Quantum Information)
Faculty Sciences

Two qualified applicants are sought for research and teaching in the area of theoretical quantum information. The research should focus either on the realization of solid-state based quantum information processing or on the theoretical foundations of quantum information. Both positions are at the W1 level, and have an option for a permanent position in approximately 6 years. Both junior groups will be supplied with 2 postdoc positions and should strengthen the new initiative in quantum information science at RWTH Aachen University and the Forschungszentrum Jülich. Recently several leading researchers working on quantum information have been attracted (among others an Alexander von Humboldt professor D. DiVincenzo). The junior professors will be part of the newly founded Institute for Quantum Information, and will participate in a larger initiative on “Future Information Technologies” of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA-FIT) involving researchers at both institutions. Close collaboration will be expected with the theoretical and experimental groups of the department of physics, and with others in JARA-FIT. Among the teaching duties will be the participation in the education of students in theoretical condensed matter physics. The candidates should have a completed university degree and a special aptitude for scientific work which is generally verified by means of an outstanding doctorate. Ability in and commitment to teaching are essential. Proficiency in German is not necessary to begin but will be expected as a teaching language within the first 5 years. The application should include supporting documents regarding success in teaching. The expected starting date of the positions is July 1, 2011.

Please send a cover letter stating research aims and a CV to: An den Dekan der Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften der RWTH Aachen, Univ. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Hiß, Templergraben 55, 52062 Aachen. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2011.

RWTH Aachen University is certified as a family-friendly university and offers a dual career program for partner hiring. We particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, disabled people and ethnic minority groups, recognizing they are underrepresented across RWTH Aachen University. The principles of fair and open competition apply and appointments will be made on merit.

Quantum-Coherent Energy Transfer Conference, April 27-28 2010

Dear colleague,

We are delighted to announce our Royal Society Scientific Discussion meeting titled “Quantum-Coherent Energy Transfer: implications for biology and new energy technologies” to be held on 27-28 April 2011 at The Kavli Royal Society International Centre, Chicheley, UK.

Evidence that photosynthetic systems are capable of supporting quantum-coherent energy transport at high temperatures has generated controversy over the implications of such phenomena for biology and
applications. This meeting will bring together leading scientists from photosynthesis, quantum information, and organic-polymer based research to discuss far-reaching consequences of these quantum effects in the design of novel, robust and efficient energy technologies.

For information about invited speakers, program and registration please visit:
http://royalsociety.org/events/energy-transfer/

We would greatly appreciate if you could help us to disseminate this announcement.

Best regards,

Alexandra Olaya-Castro (University College London)
Ahsan Nazir (Imperial College London)
Graham Fleming (University of California Berkeley)
