Newly created Department 1425, “Advanced Device Technologies”, has the long-term objective of identifying and characterizing new bit-level devices and other technology that can serve as the foundation for beyond-Moore’s law computing expected in 10 to 15 years. The department’s goal is to enable sustaining the rate of computing advances. The importance of high performance computing to our national security missions and the intrinsic value to the nation of leadership in advanced computing make this effort well-suited to Sandia. Pursuit of “end-of-roadmap” device research requires the range of Sandia expertise in physics, materials and microelectronics, as well as 1425’s contributions in computational and computer science.
The department comprises two technical concentrations
1) Electrical device modeling from atomistic to component scales in support of Sandia’s engineering missions and to advance high performance computing, in general, and progress toward exascale computing, in particular;
2) Qubit and quantum architecture theory and modeling, and quantum algorithm development. How to Apply

Job Description
Quantum Information Processing Research
Job Details
We have an immediate opening for a post doctoral research appointment. The successful candidate will be a promising research scientist with expertise in theory and modeling of fault-tolerant quantum computing, quantum algorithms, quantum computing architectures, and other applications of quantum information. The position emphasizes application of theory to address practical challenges to realizing quantum circuits with candidate qubit technologies such as quantum dots, trapped ions or neutral atoms and superconductor devices. The job assignment will involve working with a team on demonstrating practical feasibility of all aspects of quantum information processing.
Required
— Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or related discipline.
— Applicants must be highly proficient in quantum information theory and formalism, and have experience in quantum algorithm development, quantum error correction, or fault-tolerant quantum computing.
— Proficiency with UNIX or LINUX operating systems is required, as well as with an advanced scientific programming language, such as FORTRAN, C, or C++.
— The successful applicant must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a willingness to work in a collaborative team environment, and interest in interdisciplinary research.
— Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.Desired
Experience with the following is highly desired: quantum algorithm development, quantum error correction, fault-tolerant quantum computing, and/or quantum control protocols; scientific programming for high performance parallel computing, including expertise with MPI-based parallel programming; experience with both classical and quantum algorithms for simulating quantum systems. Experience making effective technical presentations and interacting with customers and partner institutions.
Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance if required for a position. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for employment including access to classified information or matter.
Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied by the DOE, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
Citizenship
Sandia is a Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory; as such, many of our jobs require a DOE security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If this position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance, U.S. citizenship and employee eligibility for clearance processing will be required at the time of hire.
If you hold dual citizenship and you accept a job offer for a position that requires a DOE-granted security clearance, you may be asked by DOE to renounce your foreign citizenship and retain only your U.S. citizenship.
Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
