Stay At Home Poker Dad

Tired of your job? Good at poker? Do what my friend Ben Foster did, quit your job and play poker online for a living. From the Wired articled linked above:

Last summer, Ben Foster quit his $110,000-a-year job as a senior product manager at eBay to play online poker full-time. In the months leading up to his decision, the 28-year-old with a degree in statistics had been tracking his winnings on a detailed spreadsheet. After checking and rechecking the numbers, he came to the conclusion that he could earn more money playing poker than working at eBay. Plus, his wife was pregnant with their second child, and he was needed around the house. Foster decided to become a stay-at-home poker dad.

[As a side note, Ben has indeed taken much money from me at poker. But that was before I learned to play poker. That was when I learned that I just shouldn’t play with him. “Strange game Dr. FalconFalken, the only way to win is not to play.”]

  1. It’s “Falken”, not Falcon. He’s supposed to represent Dr. Fredkin, who was one of the early “everything is really a giant computer” automata builders.

  2. Oops. Thanks Drew. You remind me that I want to do a post about how my view of the world has changed from “everything is really a giant computer” to the opposite!

  3. Yes, I have taken a lot of money from you playing poker, but that was before I learned how to play poker, too.
Whenever you feel up to the challenge, you just let me know. Before you make an excuse about living 1000 miles away, note that it is possible to play online heads up with no rake.
Plus, other people can be invited to watch. Let’s get it on, Boss.

Yeah and I was just a poor graduate student when you took that money for me. Sheesh, so heartless. BTW, the beer was always good.
No way am I playing with you now. You’re the one who gave me that “Poker for Dummys” book where I read “playing with a professional poker play is stupid.”

  5. Which brings up the question of why more poker pros don’t write incorrect books. I mean certainly giving disinformation about how to play is more valuable to them than giving good information? Or maybe they already are writing such books…

  6. Just one of the many stories I have read in the past 2 yrs about every day people giving up their day job and playing poker for a living.. great story. How is Ben doing now?

  8. I have seen many people working full time poker player and they are earning a big time. Poker is game, of course it is a gambling, but if you are consistent, you can certainly make good money out of this.
