Reality Propaganda

Philip Dick has a famous quote about reality. Actually on the web you can find two versions of the quote:

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.

and

Reality is whatever refuses to go away when I stop believing in it.

If the second quote is correct, well Philip Dick died in 1982, and yet reality certainly exists, so Philip Dick must not have died in 1982. So I decided to stop believing in the second quote. And yet the second quote remains.

  1. reality is that the quote exists, even if you don’t believe that it does.
reality is that philip dick is dead, even though your theory doesn’t make sense.
your logic is like saying “since i don’t like pears, they must be apples, since i don’t like apples”.

  2. Reality is that the quote exists for you. But you are not me. And which quote?
Reality is that Philip Dick is dead, in spite of the fact that my theory does make sense. Did you go to Dick’s funeral? Even then, is he dead? “Gilblets” thinks not.
My logic is like “since I don’t like pears, they must be pears, since I don’t like pears.” To speak is to fall into tautology.
And thus the march towards different conjuagations of “ir” begins.
