In the \u0093Pumping Iron\u0094 series, which chronicles events leading up to and including the Mr. Olympia contest of 1975, there are intimations that Schwarzenegger\u0092s ultimate goal, absurd as it would have seemed at the time, was power. \u0093I was always dreaming about very powerful people\u0097dictators and things like that,\u0094 he soliloquizes at one point in the original film. \u0093I was just always impressed by people who could be remembered for hundreds of years or even, like Jesus, being for thousands of years remembered.\u0094 In \u0093Raw Iron,\u0094 he recounts another dream: \u0093Me being a king and standing on top of a mountain\u0097and there was no room left for anybody else up there, O.K.? Just for me.\u0094 Later, a fellow-bodybuilder teases, \u0093Arnold, when are you running for President?\u0094 He shoots back, \u0093When Nixon gets impeached.\u0094 And in \u0093A Portrait\u0094 Butler recounts a conversation he had in a taxi with the actress Candice Bergen a few months after the Whitney show. Bergen is insisting that bodybuilding, and Arnold, has peaked. \u0093I disagree,\u0094 Butler replies. \u0093It\u0092s here to stay, and Arnold is going to be the Governor of California one day.\u0094 (Bergen, hooting with laughter, retorts, \u0093And one day Ronald Reagan will be President.\u0094)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
