In the \u201cPumping Iron\u201d series, which chronicles events leading up to and including the Mr. Olympia contest of 1975, there are intimations that Schwarzenegger\u2019s ultimate goal, absurd as it would have seemed at the time, was power. \u201cI was always dreaming about very powerful people\u2014dictators and things like that,\u201d he soliloquizes at one point in the original film. \u201cI was just always impressed by people who could be remembered for hundreds of years or even, like Jesus, being for thousands of years remembered.\u201d In \u201cRaw Iron,\u201d he recounts another dream: \u201cMe being a king and standing on top of a mountain\u2014and there was no room left for anybody else up there, O.K.? Just for me.\u201d Later, a fellow-bodybuilder teases, \u201cArnold, when are you running for President?\u201d He shoots back, \u201cWhen Nixon gets impeached.\u201d And in \u201cA Portrait\u201d Butler recounts a conversation he had in a taxi with the actress Candice Bergen a few months after the Whitney show. Bergen is insisting that bodybuilding, and Arnold, has peaked. \u201cI disagree,\u201d Butler replies. \u201cIt\u2019s here to stay, and Arnold is going to be the Governor of California one day.\u201d (Bergen, hooting with laughter, retorts, \u201cAnd one day Ronald Reagan will be President.\u201d)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
