{"id":4592,"date":"2010-11-20T21:45:02","date_gmt":"2010-11-21T04:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/?p=4592"},"modified":"2010-11-20T21:45:02","modified_gmt":"2010-11-21T04:45:02","slug":"4592","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/2010\/11\/20\/4592\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto CIFAR Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My last trip to Canada for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cifar.ca\/home.nsf\/pages\/home\">CIFAR<\/a> conference was&#8230;.<a href=\"https:\/\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/?p=2131#more-2131\">interesting<\/a>.\u00a0 This time I&#8217;m in Toronto for the quantum computing CIFAR meeting and I&#8217;m happy to report that the meeting is full of people who mostly believe quantum theory and who also happen to be doing very interesting work.\u00a0 My favorite talk, because I&#8217;m biased to this line of work, was Robert Raussendorf&#8217;s talk on the universality for measurement-based quantum computing on the <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1009.2840\">2D AKLT state<\/a> (work he did with Tzu-Chieh Wei and Ian Affleck.\u00a0 The authors are TAR, heh.)\u00a0 It was also interesting to hear the state of position based quantum cryptography.\u00a0 It seems that history (bit commitment) is repeating itself?\u00a0 Marcin Pawlowski also gave a very neat derivations of Bell inequalities that I&#8217;d never seen&#8230;.using an Escher drawing!<br \/>\nSome photos.\u00a0 First of all it was not clear if the pain the sign below was related at all to quantum information processing:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/cifarpain.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4593\" title=\"cifarpain\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/cifarpain.png?resize=500%2C331&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a>And then there was what some would consider computer scientist&#8217;s heaven:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/proof.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4594\" title=\"proof\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/proof.png?resize=400%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a>I did manage to have a beer and write some equations in said bar.\u00a0 I&#8217;m certain they are correct.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My last trip to Canada for a CIFAR conference was&#8230;.interesting.\u00a0 This time I&#8217;m in Toronto for the quantum computing CIFAR meeting and I&#8217;m happy to report that the meeting is full of people who mostly believe quantum theory and who also happen to be doing very interesting work.\u00a0 My favorite talk, because I&#8217;m biased to &hellip;
