{"id":3626,"date":"2010-07-13T22:02:12","date_gmt":"2010-07-14T05:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/?p=3626"},"modified":"2010-07-13T22:02:12","modified_gmt":"2010-07-14T05:02:12","slug":"first-arxiv-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dabacon.org\/pontiff\/2010\/07\/13\/first-arxiv-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"First arXiv Paper?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was under the impression that the arXiv was started in August of 1991.\u00a0 For example, navigating to the hep-th category and pulling up <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/year\/hep-th\/91\">a listing by dates<\/a> will list the first paper as <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/hep-th\/9108001\">hep-th\/9108001<\/a> by Horne and Horowitz.<a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/find\/hep-th\/1\/au:+Horowitz_G\/0\/1\/0\/all\/0\/1\"><\/a> Indeed wikipedia tells us that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The arXiv was originally developed by <a title=\"Paul Ginsparg\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Ginsparg\">Paul  Ginsparg<\/a> and started in 1991 as a repository for preprints in physics  and later expanded to include astronomy, mathematics, computer science, nonlinear science, quantitative biology and, most recently, statistics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However&#8230;with the arXiv api one can perform searches for papers by the date they were last updated.\u00a0 Here, for example, is how to search for arXiv articles prior to the one listed above <a href=\"http:\/\/export.arxiv.org\/api\/query?search_query=lastUpdatedDate:[000012310900+TO+199108150000]&amp;max_results=100&amp;sortBy=lastUpdatedDate\">http:\/\/export.arxiv.org\/api\/query?search_query=lastUpdatedDate:[000012310900+TO+199108150000]&amp;max_results=100&amp;sortBy=lastUpdatedDate<\/a>.\u00a0 Whah?\u00a0 Lots of hits, including many papers by Knuth \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Note that these papers do not have arXiv numbers below the one listed above&#8230;but they have date stamps that are prior to the August 1991 date!\u00a0 By this account the first updated paper is <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/physics\/9403001v1\">physics\/9403001<\/a>&#8212;a, uh, paper of some note&#8212;that was updated on Fri, 25 April 1986 at 15:39:49 GMT!<br \/>\nThe moral?\u00a0 Well there isn&#8217;t one, but those who play with the <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/help\/api\/index\">arXiv api <\/a>may need to consider this date oddity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was under the impression that the arXiv was started in August of 1991.\u00a0 For example, navigating to the hep-th category and pulling up a listing by dates will list the first paper as hep-th\/9108001 by Horne and Horowitz.
