Overview:
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Grade 1 for experiments in ion-trap quantum computing. The primary goal of the project is to implement fast quantum logic gates between ion qubits. We will use an ultrafast fibre laser system, developed here at Griffith, to apply large optical forces to laser-cooled Yb+ ions. These forces will enable us to realise the fast-gate protocol of Garcia-Ripoll et al [PRL 91, 157901 (2003)], speeding up ion-trap quantum logic by a factor of 100 over current experiments.

This is a full time, fixed term (2 years) position based at the Nathan Campus.

The role:
The primary role of the Research Fellow is to work on experiments related to the project. The appointee should also contribute ideas for improving the project and the overall experiment, help supervise RHD students, and communicate project results through journal publications and presentations at international conferences.

The person:
The ideal candidate will have, or be about to complete, a PhD in laser cooling experiments and/or mode-locked laser technology. Experience with ultrafast fibre lasers, nonlinear optics, or highly stable CW lasers will also be helpful. The position will be available from June 2013, and applicants available to start near that time are preferred. Women are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary Range: Research Fellow, Grade 1: $63,153 – $74,288 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution:  $73,889- $86,917 per annum.
