"Amphetamines are clearly very dangerous and I would be rather afraid to be around anyone using them."
You're being rather dramatic I would say. Haven't you ever heard of Adderall? I know that the prescription of stimulants to kids is particular is another discussion entirely, but whether you like it or not, it is actually a fairly common occurance for children to take amphetamines (Adderall) on a daily basis over a span of years. And these children aren't dangerous at all.

Has anyone read Reinhold Niebuhr? In particular, Faith and Politics? It is very interesting and relevant it makes the case for the limits of rationalism to embody the idea of value (e.g. value of life, value of others, etc.) as well as mythology. That the recognizable truth of value explained in rational terms cannot avoid borrowing some from religion because "value" is just beyond the grasp of pure rationalization. That is, when you reason out why one should value life at all, it is impossible to avoid the basic tenets of religion. In the end, in order for life to hold value above all else something must give it significance. Now, he is not making the case that God or the claims of religion are correct and thus give life significance. Rather his point is that the mythology of religion simply deals with the idea better than rationalism and that rationalism having the need for a transcendent measurement cannot help but buy into religion's argument.

I have my own thoughts on this, though. I still think one can start with an axiomatic view that life has significance simply because life (i.e. we) says so. The fact that it is in our best interest to say so therefore allows it to fit within the confines of rationalism.

Just wondered if anyone else had thoughts on Niebuhr's philosophy.

The wife again! Sorry for the last entry. I was MAD! There are some issues that Andrew needs to work on-as no human is perfect. There wasn't a true affair, but something-in some minds would be similar to infidelity. Just one of those forks in the road that marriage gets tested with. We are working on it because for some reason, GOD keeps putting us back together. We love each other to the fullest and when these type of issues arise, we have to work through it and we always get stronger. We married for better or worse! Andrew has changed for the better since he has found GOD 3 years ago-he is awesome at spreading the word. But, we should also practice what we preach. Thank you for your time and carry on all!

I don't know what conciousness is. However, it is clear that there is some level of awareness that goes from those things that are completely inert to those who have the capacity to understand and some how feel what others are feeling. Some people can really feel something when other people feel pain. and I am not talking of physical pain, but that type of feelings like desperation or sadness when a love one dies.

Perhaps conciousness is the capacity of feeeling, again not talking about physical pain. For example, a person that owns a bird as a pet or a rabbit can never see their pet jumping of happines as soon as they enter their home, yet my dog do it. Feelings is what set apart higher living beings. So far in the universe, and untill proven otherwise, some humans are the ones who have the highiest fellings powers. Probably if indeed some non physical live exist and also can feel. Whatever that is, I guess that we could call them higher beings or angels.

THIS is Andrew's soon to be EX-WIFE! Andrew continously tells you all that he is a Christian,but did he also mention he is a hypocrit? Where does it say in the bible that infidelity is OK? Maybe someone should explain that one to him. Infidelity is wrong whether you are a Christian or not.He just bought himself a big fat divorce!Obviously his values about marriage don't match what GOD says it should be.

Wow! much has changed in the past 2 months since I last posted. Dodgers fell to the world series champs. And we now have President Obama waiting to be sworn in as president. And some things have stayed the same like our 401k's getting battered day after day.
 I read in the paper today that the American Humanist Association has bought ad space in D.C. to promote themselves. I think the slogan is;
"Why believe in God? Just be good for goodness' sake." I wonder if the hypothetical Jesus would promote his ideas in this manner? And what his slogan would have been?
 How many rapists, liars, felons, etc... do you think the humanists will reach with their ad campaign? The slogan seems more directed at poking fun of Christianity then reaching the hearts of anyone.
 You know I like to use personal stories to provoke thought. So, I feel inclined to share what happened to my family 2 weeks ago. It was a very surreal moment. We were taking family pictures at a state park. My wife, our kids, my wife's mother and grandmother were all together.
I wanted to get back home in time to watch the second half of the Bear's game so I began hurrying up the progress. My mother in law wanted to show us this old bridge, so we stopped and I waited in the car. As they came back to the car, a motorcycle crashed. My wife ran to the accident as if it were our kids on the motorcycle and the entire length she was yelling "call 911". She immediately saw a man and a woman and neither had helmets on. The man's breathing was like he was being suffocated. Blood was coming from his ears, eyes, head and nose. The woman sat up and was dazed. She never turned her head and didn't know why she was sitting on the pavement. She moved her bandana with her hand and blood began to flow from her wound. My wife yelled to find something to hold against her head. I gave another bystander my t-shirt and she held it against the passsenger's head. My wife yelled he stopped breathing and began chest compressions. He came back to consciousness and asked about his girlfriend. But he was just as confused and his legs and arms would swing wildly. My wife held his legs down at first, but this guy weighed about 250 and she is about 140 at best. I would later learn that he urinated on himself and it got all over my wife's arm along with the blood.
When the ambulances arrived the paramedic said to get my kids out of there. But, to me this is to be experienced especially by my kids. But I wasn't about to argue. One of the paramedics recognized my wife from the hospital and she ended up helping until he was loaded into the helicopter.
 My wife called the hospital to check on them. She learned that he was about 65 years old and married. And was put into a medicine induced coma after surgery and has not awaken yet as far as we know. The girlfriend did not know about his wife and her ankle was shattered. And the only thing she remembers about the accident was my wife barking orders.
 Hope all is well with everyone. Noone has jumped from their office window due to the stock market I hope.
